Four things to consider when choosing a truck seat
Choosing the right truck seat is the key to the vehicle being comfortable. Trucks and other machinery are often occupied for many hours at a time, and it can be punishing on the driver's body if they do not have the best seat. Here are some things to look out for when choosing a truck seat.
Adjustability
Firstly, make sure that the seat has a number of adjustable positions, especially if it will be used by a number of different drivers. Everyone has their own body shape and the seat will need to be adjusted to fit it. Adjustments may also need to be made for different types of driving or to remain comfortable after some time has passed. If the position of the seat cannot be changed to suit the driver, their back and muscular system may be put under unnecessary stress.
Back support
A second thing to look out for is good lumbar support. Many truck drivers suffer from back pain, and the cause of this is often the seat of their vehicle. The seat should support the driver's back so that the spine is upright and relaxed. Without this support, the driver may sit in the wrong position and develop back problems.
Leg support
As well as support for the back, a good truck seat will provide support for the legs. The whole of the driver's body needs to be in a comfortable and safe position, not just the spine. If the legs are not properly supported by the chair and are too cramped, it can prevent blood flow and can place pressure on the muscles. This can then affect the rest of the body. Make sure the seat supports the legs as well as the back to keep the driver in the correct position.
Cushion
Finally, don't forget about choosing the right cushion. This is not just a matter of sitting comfortably, it will also protect the driver from some of the bumps and shocks that they might experience, which could compress the spine. Whether a softer or harder cushion is better is really a matter for the driver; different people will feel comfortable with different types. However, firmer cushions are likely to give the driver a better posture when driving, which should minimise problems.
Uncomfortable drivers can become tired and make mistakes, as well as find themselves with back pain or muscular problems. Choosing the right seat will keep your workforce healthy and productive.
